- Extensive evidence indicates that the mental anguish stigmatization creates in stigmatized individuals debilitates performance and wellbeing, and leads to high levels of distress, poor quality of life and poor mental health. This meta-analysis aimed to uncover under which conditions stigmatization is more or less likely to occur through an in-depth investigation of the association between valenced intergroup contact and outgroup prejudice. Recent research suggests that negative contact between stigmatized and non-stigmatized individuals has a larger detrimental effect on outgroup attitudes toward the stigmatized outgroup than positive contact has beneficial effects, the so-called 'negative contact valence asymmetry effect.' We tested the existence of this negative valence asymmetry meta- analytically with data from the expansive contact literature (k = 236, 154,905 participants). We tested whether valenced outgroup stereotypes moderate these asymmetries. Evidence for an overall negative contact valence asymmetry was found. Negative contact produced significantly greater contact stigmatization than positive contact produced de-stigmatization effects. Consistent with expectations, these negative asymmetries were significantly slimmer or erased after contact experiences with members of positively valenced, high status, and socio-economic status outgroup and under intimate-inducing contact. Implications for interventions at both societal and individual levels are discussed.
